Are you paying attention, or is it the other way around?

I was browsing through the net last week when I came across a research which claims that the average attention span of an internet user is dropping and is approximately 4 seconds currently.  Now that was a shocking statistic considering that if the users do not pay attention, then what is the point of millions of dollars of investments made by companies into rich website and online advertising?

I guess I wasn’t the first one to arrive at this conclusion. After a little more digging, I came across the concept of Attention Economy . Basically information on the web has exploded and the choice available to the end user is making it more and difficult for them to be able to filter out what they are really interested in. This affects both users looking for information they need as well as or organizations who are creating the information for you. So organizations have started to realize that your attention is becoming a scarce commodity and are willing to do anything and everything possible to grab it, maybe even pay for it. So what impact will this trend have on the space of Information management, especially portals, content management and search? Here are some thoughts:

Are horizontal portal frameworks mature for external facing web?

I have heard many times from clients that they want to use a horizontal portal framework for the external facing web but are worried about the performance/scalability and maturity of the technology. Most of the Internet generation has seen portal frameworks perform on the intranets, some small user base external portals but we have not seen many large  implementations being done using the Horizontal Portal frameworks. The Amazon’s, Yahoo’s, Google’s, Facebook’s of the worlds are using proprietary frameworks. Some of these heavy weights have started using current generation technologies like J2EE, Flash/Flex/Ajax but none of these are even thinking of using a COTS Horizontal Portal products.  Many online retailers today are making use of the COTS e-commerce Packages (I call them Vertical Portal Solutions). So in some sense COTS has been successfully implemented for large e-commerce based implementations. But e-Commerce packages were built for the external facing requirements where as the success and deployments of the COTS horizontal portal framework have primarily come from internal solutions.

Do you really need a portal?

That is a million dollar question which encapsulates a judicious decision that has the potential to save you a million dollars. As a portal architect, executing portal projects for customers across geographies & verticals, I have come across instances where portal technology is sometime misused to deliver a simple transactional web site.

These days, the term ‘Portal’ has become fairly misleading thanks to the marketing, propaganda and hype surrounding portals. It often leads unsuspecting customers to believe that any kind of website should be implemented using the portal technology. In fact, I often see the term ‘portal’ and ‘portal technology’ being used interchangeably. Internet facing portals can be implemented without using the ‘portal technology’ by using regular web development technologies.

Content Sources

Last week, I was at a “kick-off” meeting for a client that wanted to fundamentally refresh their online strategy. I was pleasantly surprised that they had already had some serious thoughts around governance once their new baby went online. It is amazing how many large sized implementations have got off the ground without this thinking being done up-front.

Most organizations treat Portal implementations as a project that will result in some operational changes. Few, however, realize the importance of having a good governance process in place. For Information Portals, the processes around content governance will directly influence the portal’s success.

The end of the world ... As we know it

I have often looked at the way portal implementation programmes are run, and can’t help but wince at the wastefulness that takes place.
