Green Computing and Virtualization
While contemplating about the importance of virtualization in achieving green computing standards especially in organizations hosting data centers, I came across an interesting article here on how energy emissions from data centers can be used to warm homes in Scandinavian countries.
The article mentions that in a typical data center only 40-45% of the energy is used in actual computing while the remaining is used in powering agents to cool these servers. Besides, data centers run by a search giant already seem to be using around 1% of the word's energy and their demands seem to be rising fast every year.
This is interesting information in the context of the fact that the world has finally woken up to the need to put their heads together to resolve issues related to global warming at the UN Climate Summit at Copenhagen, Denmark.
There is a general feeling that the summit highlights the importance that the world is conscious that technological advancements have contributed to increased emissions and the need of the hour is to bring in another set of eco-friendly technology advancements. Which means 'Virtualization' is a word that is going to be part of every day conversation in enterprises as the advantages of 'virtualizing' the data center are well known. As a by-product, the focus is also going to be on development of tools that are going to make the process of virtualizing the infrastructure and managing it much easier.

We have to out our heads together and come out with ideas, on how to make a better world. Simply look around, are cities are chocking with smog, the planet is experiencing climate changes and natural disasters have almost become persistent hazard.
Unless we wake up, the generation next will bear the brunt of our responsibility.
Let’s make our planet…………..our home!!!

Agree whole heartedly with you Naveen.
Each one has to contribute and it is the sum that is going to make the difference.
It is heartening to know that there seems green technology revolution to correct a lot of harm that have been done by reckless innovation harmful to nature. Virtualization is one among them.
Waste plastic is being reused to provide strength to tar used to lay roads in some Indian cities - an interesting initiative to put waste plastic to use rather than allow it to fly around and choke the ecology.

Suraj plastic is a real killer. It’s really hearting to know that waste plastic is now being re-used wisely. Simply hope that government will open waste plastic buying kiosks, all over the city and pay more than what the average Jon Doe pays!!!! This will encourage rag pickers, house wives, anyone who wants to make that extra buck to sell waste plastic at these kiosks.
It’s about time all of us adorn a new avatar, and be Toxic Terminators!!!!

The IT industry is indeed waking up to do it's bit in taking care.
The concept of Green Computing involves reducing energy consumption of computers, environmental friendly use, reuse and recycling of unwanted computers, energy efficient design and manufacturing considerations. From the software industry side, researchers are looking at enhancing algorithmic efficiency, use of virtualization, terminal servers, using efficiently designed versions of traditional power hoggers (video cards, displays, storage etc), PC power management etc. Companies are also encouraging telecommuting because of significant advancements in teleconferencing technology.
Am looking forward to engineering colleges encouraging students to innovate in this field and contribute to necessary research to sustain the environment.
