Duet of Process and Collaboration

Highly anticipated and soon-to-be-released Duet Enterprise, a new joint product from SAP and Microsoft, enables the interoperability between SAP applications and Microsoft SharePoint 2010. Duet Enterprise will empower all employees to consume and extend SAP processes and information from Microsoft SharePoint and Office 2010. Customers will be able to expand the value of their existing investments in SAP and Microsoft, respond to their business needs rapidly and effectively and drive the productivity of their people and teams.

Duet Enterprise a product developed jointly by SAP and Microsoft is designed to help IT serve the business more effectively and enable all employees to consume and extend SAP applications from Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Office. Business users benefit from unified and simplified access to the information and actions they need, both from the process world of SAP applications as well as the collaborative work offered by Microsoft SharePoint. Users can interact with information directly from SAP ERP directly from a SharePoint site. Users can create a team workspace from SAP objects such as a customer instance, on the site they can collaborate on resolving customer issues with the relevant information from SAP ERP available directly at their fingertips. View related reports from SAP, relevant SharePoint documents and other contextual information are also available to enable effective team work. The software provides the foundation for technical interoperability between SAP applications and Microsoft SharePoint ensuring that the communication between the systems is seamless, secure, scalable and manageable.

In terms of providing ability to people to writing solutions EAS-SAP has taken a big step forward, in terms of interfacing with SAP and brining to their workflow integration, single sign on that works across the platforms, standard content that can be acted on, that is quite exiting as that is going to create a new set of IT solutions that our business communities can easily leverage. Duet Enterprise has provided the foundations and partners are going to develop upon it. In addition tool and business content enable composition of solutions that blend process oriented and collaborative work.

As a partner, architect and developer, I am really excited to see based on the starter services that have been offered, based on the business content that has been offered, how we can build my own scenarios for businesses and create a foundation to develop and code for some of really high value scenarios. We would want something as simple as for the end users to consume SAP data with SharePoint capability to span the footprint and get it to more users, get the enterprise data to more set of users so that they can consume and do their day to day task as easy as possible.

Duet also provides ready to use capabilities that offer quick time to value and enable people to interact with and collaborate around SAP information, participate in SAP workflows, access reports and explore human resources related data stored in SAP applications. SAP workflows are integrated and available for approval directly through the SharePoint task list. The approves can see related reports, documents and other approvers from the system in order to ensure informed and optimal decision making. Duet enterprise is designed to improve employee productivity in overall business efficiency to expand the value from investments customers have made in SAP and Microsoft and to help rapidly respond to an evolving business needs.

So far, the structured and highly valued content               that is maintained so well in SAP is not available to information workers within their familiar unstructured context (creating a document or using a Web portal, for example). This is not the result of a flaw in SAP; rather it results from increasing demands on information workers to provide the connections between the two worlds of structured and unstructured content. For example, experience shows that a typical business process such as creating a customer quote involves SAP for about 15 per cent of the activities, while the remaining 85 per cent of activities, such as collaborating on documents, communicating with subject matter experts, and analyzing information, occur outside of and disconnected from SAP information and processes. In brief, the work of information workers spans across structured and unstructured worlds, but their tools do not.

Challenges so far for integration of structured content and process from SAP to unstructured collaboration have been mainly:

Challenges in Communications - In order to connect a non-SAP front end system to SAP, somebody needs to write code. We must be able to connect and communicate with foreign system, either thorough code or through infrastructure.

Challenges in Identity Management - We must have some way of authenticating users against foreign system. Identity and connection management bring additional complications. First, most customers will need to solve the problem of how to manage a user's multiple accounts and how to pass the proper credentials to the foreign system. Secondly, auditing, connection management and other housekeeping activities need to be handled.

Challenges in Composition - We must be able to assemble together discrete pieces of data (from tables, function calls, etc.) into an entity that is meaningful and useful to business users.

Challenges in Resourcing - Successful interoperability requires skilled developers at all levels to address problems in security, maintenance, deployment, and so on for at least two systems.

Duet enterprise has been able to address these challenges very effectively to empower information workers to with unified and simplified access to data. Together, SharePoint Server is a true business portal platform that provides all the infrastructure needed for implementing coherent business processes in software that integrate with business systems like SAP, in ways that dramatically reduce the pain of the four challenges to integration described above.

As Infosys collaboration framework states "Context is the king". Most organizations continue to look at collaboration as a integration issue. We need to look at it as a possible integration issue in the context of the work being done by the enterprise. Duet has surely tried to start with people/information workers as the focus, has tried to look at their key goals and tried to understand how do they accomplish their goals. Duet has tried to understand who do information workers connect with, how do they connect and what information do they exchange to effectively manage business data.

I am eagerly waiting for the highly anticipated Duet Enterprise Launch Summit to be held on February 1st 2011. Infosys being a Gold partner of Duet Enterprise Launch summit, surely should provide us opportunity to interact with SAP and Microsoft executives and team members. Will SAP and SharePoint integration in Duet Enterprise be a hit? Let us wait and watch.

Improving User Experience on the Intranet

Several large Organizations today use SAP ERP to run the Operations. Over the last several years we have seen a lot of adoption of the Microsoft Sharepoint as a Platform for Intranet and Collaboration in the Organization.

A large number of Organizations have exposed SAP ERP applications as links on there Intranet Portal. Some are using SAP Netweaver as there Intranet Portal and are exposing integrated iViews on there Intranet for SAP transactions. However , a very few organizations have managed to integrate the SAP transactions into a process flow and user experience which makes the users completely unaware that they are actually using SAP  and behind the scenes transactions are entered into SAP on there behalf.  This kind of solution improves the overall User expereince as now the Users can focus on doing there work and follow a streamlined process rather than try and figure out which applications they need to go into and do x or y things to accomplish thier day to day tasks.

In this blog entry I want to introduce the possiblities of improving User experience/Usability of the Intranet of Organizations who are using Sharepoint Platform for thier Intranet and have SAP in thier Organization.

Microsof and SAP are launching something called as Enterprise DUET which will allow Organizations having Sharepoint and SAP Netweaver a tool which can help them take the User Experience/Usability of there Intranet a couple of notches up from where they are today.

Most Intranets today just provide a Single Sign-on to backend applications and the users have to figure/know the process and applications they need to access to do there work.  This is a good begining but does not provide a context and collaborative environment for the Information worker to accomplish what he needs day to day and this hampers his Productivity. With the new Solution from Microsoft and SAP called Enterprise DUET now Organizations can build some very usable Business Process Integration and enable the complete Process Portal and really make a positive impact to the productivity of the Information worker. Now people can collaborate and do there work in a process environment which traverses applicaiton boundaries enabling a improved user expereince for Information workers.

Implementing the above solution however will require quite a few sessions with the users to really understand Business processes and Personas. This will also involve identification of different applications which need to be integrated into this process. Once you have the above you can use DUET and tie together a Business process into a process portal on your Sharepoint Platform. The out of box version of DUET provides 5-6 SAP business entities which can be accessed on the Sharepoint Platform. DUET provides the complete plumbing and security, single sign-on etc to make data and process across boundaries from SAP into Sharepoint. The implementation team will need to create the new components required for there process on SAP netweaver side and on Sharepoint BCS side. After this the UI team needs to build a user expereince in Sharepoint and tie that to the BCS components.

At Infosys we are investing in building ready made solutions using DUET. Currently, we are working on building a HR Self Service Portal area which allows Users to conduct all HR related transactions like applying leave, checking salary, other life events in a Sharepoint 2010 front end and SAP backend. We will be coming out with  serveral such solutions as DUET becomes more mature.

This is an exiting time for people looking to improve information worker productivity. DUET promises the same level of produtivity improvement as earlier solutions like Single Sign-on, password management, Content management and Personalization. However there will be multiple challenges to prove business case and actual $ improvement in revenues or cost savings to the Organizations which can hamper the adoption of this technology.

Why Duet when we already have BCS and BizTalk for SAP integration

Duet has arrived and it's a huge relief for any enterprise which is looking into SAP and SharePoint integration. Enterprises were having limited options earlier which were either to look at BizTalk or BCS for integration. I spent some time looking into possible reasons why only Duet based solution will work efficiently

BizTalk has been around for several years as Microsoft's Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) platform. BizTalk achieves this through use of the several default adaptors. And of course there are third party adaptors to satisfy your needs if any of the default adaptors don't seem to be appropriate for your requirement. BizTalk server can communicate with a variety of protocols and thus integrate data from applications running on different platforms.

So in a typical scenario we see that BizTalk server integrates a purchase order system with Inventory system, with accounting system and these systems could be running on different platforms and be using different communication protocols.

Business Connectivity Services (BCS) as we know provides connectors for integrating data from external systems into SharePoint. Using BCS external data can be accessed from SharePoint as though it is native SharePoint data.

So why can we not use BCS in conjunction with BizTalk to integrate SharePoint with SAP systems? Why do we need Duet?

The answer is yes we can use BCS and BizTalk together to integrate SharePoint with SAP. But there are several powerful features that Duet Enterprise offers

·       Duet provided interaction relies on user interactions whereas BizTalk provided integration runs on machine-to-   machine interaction.

·       Duet supports sending data back to SAP applications

·       Duet based SharePoint application easily blends information from SAP and unstructured information from SharePoint itself

·       Duet Enterprise has a set of ready-to-use capabilities that can be taken advantage of in SharePoint with ease

·       Duet Enterprise can make data from SAP be available offline for use in SharePoint

·       Duet makes it possible to gather data from different generations of SAP applications into SharePoint

·       Duet makes it possible to allow users to execute decision steps from SAP processes inside SharePoint

The above does not mean that Duet will replace BizTalk and BCS in architectures that integrate SharePoint with SAP. In fact a combination of all the three technologies might still be needed. Consider the following SharePoint integration requirement scenario:

·       Supply chain activities are managed in SAP applications

·       Several non-SAP supplier systems exists and need to be integrated with

·       A system is needed to monitor the flow of goods being acquired from an intercompany exchange that uses Rosetta Net protocol

In the above scenario a combination of Duet, BizTalk and BCS can be used to come up with a robust architecture.

Each of the technologies provides overlapping capabilities and using them in the correct spot will save time, effort and money. Duet is an indispensible tool that provides a high level of integration of SharePoint with SAP applications and adds value to an organizations already existing infrastructure.

Surface 2

Microsoft Surface is a few years old, but I didn't seem to have done very well. There are limited instances of its usage and applications that run on it. Some reasons for this have been a bulky horizontal table, the cost and specialized hardware, which meant high replacement costs in case some parts were to get damaged. The base operating system was also Windows Vista, which we know wasn't all the successful

At CES 2011 Conference, Steve Ballmer, as part of his Keynote address showed some things in store for users in 2011. You can watch the keynote here. The keynote showcased Hands-free Zone experience which brings movies, music, TV and sports on XBOX 360 along with Kinect. Kinect is the new add on to XBOX that makes an individual the controller for the various actions and games played on XBOX.

Along with this also showcased was Windows Phone 7, which was launched recently in many parts of the world.

And finally there was also Surface 2, which addresses many of the concerns from its earlier version like

  • uses Windows 7 operating system
  • much thinner (just about 4")
  • has done with various cameras and other such custom hardware and instead uses PixelSense to recognize fingers and objects on the table
  • supports vertical orientation as well
  • cheaper

With Surface SDK 2.0 alongside support for WPF 4 and XNA 4, Surface may actually see a revival of interest, with new and interesting commercial applications being targetted towards it. I am definitely going to be watching this with keen interest. How about you?

Duet - SharePoint and SAP integration

It has been a while since i have been working on the Duet RDP program with Microsoft. We were one of the first few who got an opportunity to understand what Duet is all about even before the same will be launched into the market. SAP and Microsoft conducted few sessions exclusive for Infosys and gave a heads up to understand and work on the Duet.

Duet is one of the highly anticipated products which will help enterprises consume and extend SAP through SharePoint 2010. I will focus in this blog on the how Duet will help in increasing the value of existing investments made by enterprises.

Duet gives this value of leveraging the existing SAP platform with powerful features like

·         Prebuilt integration as an add-on to Microsoft SharePoint and  SAP Net weaver platform

·         Has OOB interoperability with support for

o    Security / SSO

o    Templates for accessing SAP data objects

o    All are industry standard based

o    Easy access to SAP reports

o    Browse HR information

o    Easy integration with Office

·         Also provide very useful tools and services for SAP ABAP developers, .Net developers and business users

o    Service composition and adoption

o    Custom business logic development

o    Field configurations

o    Declarative and no code

o    Custom UX and data integration

Duet is the foundation for interoperability between SAP and SharePoint. Apart from giving the flexibility of integration with SAP systems it also provides capabilities like providing

·         Duet enterprise sites

·         Duet enterprise profiles Enterprise collaboration and much more

I will look into the enterprise collaboration feature which I got to explore. The first steps for this will be to install the SharePoint bits and the SAP bits. Both were available for Infosys as it is part of the Olympus partner program with Microsoft.

The scenario we tried to explored was integration of the SharePoint with SAP and

·         Fetching information from the SAP  and presenting the same  on SharePoint collaboration websites

·         To blend the SAP data and business process with content in SharePoint and enable better collaboration

Microsoft always looked at enhancing developer productivity and has come up with easy tools and templates to build this integration not just the developer community, I am sure many of folks with investments in the SAP will be looking forward at DUET launch and are looking at leveraging the powerful collaboration features of SharePoint 2010 to drive people productivity, expand the value of existing investment and also rapidly respond to the business needs.
