NextGen User Interfaces

The journey of user interfaces(UI) as we know today started back in 1962 from then UI's have evolved from basic command line screens into aesthetic, interactable, graphical versions. But scope for further improvement is immense in ways of interaction, navigation, and consumption. Building intelligence in UI can bring about NextGen UIs which will be capable of meeting personalized user needs.

Future UI's should be self-personalizing in nature and adapting to user specific requirements rather than one size fits all model. They should be multi-purpose as to be used by different users for different purposes, customizable as per user taste and preferences for providing personalized experience, extendable by providing new features and functionalities though plug and play model, options and features should evolve as per user preferences, capable of anticipating user specific actions and patterns, immersive by involving natural human interaction modes etc.

The value proposition of self-personalizing user interfaces evolves around below aspects:

·         Responsive to User State: will be able respond to the user's current state and environment specific nuances such as User is still or walking, User emotion and mood, Time of Day light quality, Adapts accordingly for the better UX

·         Behavioral Suggestion: self-personalization will enable suggestion of relevant user actions and options based on Previous behavior, User Classifications, Anticipated reaction, UI will act as a curator while catering preferences

·         Guiding Optimum Outcomes: The UI will also guide the user in their choices for optimum outcomes, thus enhancing Usability of interface, Touchpoint Efficiency, Improved TAT, UI will act as an advisor while catering preferences

·         Consistent Across Channels: The UI will also integrate past actions and collaborate tasks across platforms by Personalized environments, Orchestrated applications, Continuity of interaction, Creating a consistent cross channels experience

There are three key factors behind the envisage of self-personalizing user interfaces namely Adaptive Interaction, Adaptive Navigation, and Adaptive Consumption.

Adaptive Interaction: Real time Improvisation of the content and display to make the interface engaging and relevant based on the current user profile

Ø  Font and Text Optimization

Ø  Theme and Color Scheme

Ø  User State & Environment

Ø  User Mood & Emotion

Adaptive Navigation: Guide the users to their specific goal within the system by optimizing navigation based on user classification and behavior

Ø  Evolving touchpoints

Ø  User Activity Anticipation

Ø  Destination Optimization

Ø  Classifications and behavior

Adaptive Consumption: To make the content and interface more intuitive, understandable, and meaningful for better consumption and aid decision making

Ø  Multi-Platform Interaction

Ø  Usability of interface

Ø  Touchpoint efficiency

Ø  Improved turnaround time

There are multiple technology areas such as Gesture Recognition, Eyeball Tracking, Brainwaves Identification, Voice & Video Interface, Wearables, Multimodal Interfaces, Immersive Interfaces, Sensor Network, Haptic Interfaces which we can leverage to accelerate journey towards NextGen interfaces. Also, from usage and consumption perspective starting from individual users, smart homes, connected vehicles, public facilities, retail users, to industrial users there are multitude of use cases and applications where NextGen interfaces will be gamechanger.
